Meet Maggie! She is a regular rehab patient at ECAC. We love working with her and she loves her rehab sessions!
Maggie was diagnosed with severe arthritis of the elbows and metacarpals in 2011. She was very painful and less mobile. Her quality of life was diminishing. Maggie’s owners were willing to try anything to help her discomfort without having to heavily medicate.
Maggie began rehabilitation in April of 2011. She started with laser therapy to help manage inflammation and pain. Her owners saw improvement. We continued laser therapy and incorporated a weight loss program as well as exercises to help with mobility. Maggie’s owners continued to see improvement.
Recently Maggie has started acupuncture. She loves her relaxing sessions! Since she has started these sessions, she has been more comfortable for longer periods of time. Maggie began having rehab 1-2 times weekly, then every other week, then monthly and now every 6 weeks. Her owners have done an excellent job of keeping her weight down. She is able to extend and flex her elbows more comfortably, and her toes have more mobility. Walks are no longer painful and are once again part of Maggie’s daily life.
We are pleased with Maggie’s progress and hope you enjoy her story!
Maggie lays on the PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Therapy Bed) for 30 minutes. It helps with pain management and all of our patients love it! During her time on the bed we are able to do other modalities such as Low Laser Light therapy and heat or cryotherapy, as well as massage.
Sit to Downs are a great exercise to help with Maggie’s elbow flexion and extension.
Working on the Physioball is one of Maggie’s favorite exercises! She gets very excited. Since she has to grip the ball her metacarpals get a great stretch. Walking forward and backwards while on the ball help the mobility in her metacarpal joints. She does a “push up” on the ball to get extension in her elbows.
Maggie thoroughly enjoys her acupuncture sessions. After her workout she gets to enjoy a 30 minute session. She sleeps very well!
“I felt that Maggie was getting to the end of her life due to her inability to walk, now she moves like she did a few years ago. You have added years back to her life. Thank you for giving me back the spark in our dog. I would recommend your therapy for anyone with an animal that is suffering from the debilitationg effects of arthritis the way Maggie was affected.” – Sara Hanvey (Maggie’s Mom)
